TEACHING

My courses grew out of a genuine love for the Spanish language and a curiosity about how culture shapes—and is shaped by—our policies, economies, and everyday systems. Whatever the context, I invite students to move fluidly between the personal and the professional, theory and practice, creativity and scholarship. From 2014 to 2024, I’ve had the joy of working with students at Princeton University, Barnard College, and William & Mary—each group bringing its own questions and stories that keep these question relevant and evolving.

Thoughts from former students…

“This was the most interesting class I’ve taken in college so far, Professor Sowmya is an incredible instructor and so knowledgeable and supportive to her students. :)”

“Professor Sowmya always challenges her students. She pushes us to question everything and go past critical frameworks to apply in our lives and academia. She organizes her readings with the lectures well in a way where it can allow for discussion or part lectures to ensure we get the overall themes.”

“I really enjoyed this class! It never once felt like Profe Sowmya was lacking in thoughts or directions… I gained a lot of confidence to speak in this class, as well as improved my writing skills. Profe Sowmya provided constructive feedback on essays and requested and listened to input from the students.”

“Looked forward to coming to class! Professor Ramanathan made it such a welcoming environment and taught about super interesting topics. Her passion and own interest in the subject really showed, which encouraged our interest too! Was great about accepting all Spanish levels and loved having class with her.”
